New WHO report highlights progress in the fight against severe chronic diseases |14 April 2025|African Region
Twenty African countries have increased access to services for severe chronic disease such as type 1 diabetes, sickle-cell disease, and rheumatic and congenital heart diseases, over the last four years since adapting a new model to decentralize the critical services, a new report by World Health Organization (WHO) shows.

N’Djamena – In a renewed effort to eradicate circulating polio variant type 2 in the Lake Chad Basin, Ministers of Health from Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, Niger and Nigeria launched today a synchronized regional vaccination campaign aimed at protecting 83 million under 5 children. The initiative is a crucial milestone in the fight against variant poliovirus type 2, which continues to pose a threat to millions of children across the region.

Considering the beginning of the season of increased circulation of influenza and other respiratory viruses in the southern hemisphere of the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) recommends Member States to review and adapt their preparedness plans and the organization of essential health services delivery, in anticipation of potential surges in demands for health systems. PAHO/WHO recommends strengthening surveillance for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2, as well as adopting the necessary measures for the prevention and control of respiratory virus infections, implementing measures to ensure early diagnosis and appropriate clinical management, especially among the population at high risk of severe disease, guaranteeing vaccination against respiratory viruses, ensuring high vaccination coverage in high-risk groups, adequate forecasting and organization of health services, the strict compliance with infection prevention control measures, having adequate supply of antivirals and personal protective equipment, and ensuring risk communication for populations and health professionals.
